The Benefits of Warmies and Microwavable Stuffed Animals

The emotional benefits of Warmies are obvious. Who wouldn’t want to hug a heated stuffed toy when you’re hurting or cold? And you’re never too old to love stuffed animals.

As it turns out, there’s plenty of scientific evidence showing that heating pads have measurable health benefits. So if someone rolls their eyes at the adorable axolotl adorning your belly or the hand-sewn snake wrapped around your back, tell them you’re just following doctor’s orders!

Warmies for Chronic Pain

Heat and cold therapy are the most popular home remedies for treating chronic pain. They are relatively safe and easily accessible. According to a 2020 survey conducted by the U.S. Pain Foundation, 77% of people with chronic pain find heat and cold therapy to be effective. Heat therapy is slightly more popular than cold therapy, with 67.8% of respondents stating they use heat at least once a week, compared to 44.9% who use cold at least once a week.

Multiple studies have shown that heat is a highly effective remedy for pain. For example, a 2004 study found that a heat wrap was a more effective treatment than ibuprofen or acetaminophen for adults with chronic low back pain.

Warmies for Adults and Kids with Anxiety and Depression

Heat therapy has been shown to reduce anxiety along with pain in patients undergoing painful medical procedures. Preliminary studies suggest that raising the body’s temperature during activities is a promising treatment for major depressive disorder. Inflammation has been linked with depression, so applying heat to painful muscles and joints can reduce depression as well.

Using Warmies for Cold Therapy

Although Warmies are usually thought of as a heat therapy product, they can also be used for cold therapy. Simply place your toy in a Ziplock bag and leave it in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours.

Safety Best Practices When Using Warmies and Microwavable Stuffed Animals

Warmies are generally safe, but like any product that gets hot, they can potentially cause burns. For your safety, always follow the heating instructions that are included with the item. Place the toy against your clothing, not directly on your skin. If the heated plush toy is too hot, allow it to cool for a few minutes before use, or place a towel between the toy and your clothing.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics Safe Sleep Guidelines, babies under 12 months of age should not sleep with a stuffed animal as they can pose a suffocation hazard. Always supervise toddlers and young children when they use microwavable stuffed animals. Make sure your child is physically capable of pushing the toy away from their body if it is too hot or impedes their breathing.
