Overall Top Pick: Mosaic Weighted Blanket
Looking for the ultimate weighted blanket? This is The One, and it's at the top of our list for so many reasons. Mosaic has been making weighted blankets for years, and it shows in the quality of the product you'll receive. Their blankets are handmade in Texas, USA, so you can shop ethically and support a small business. They have many sizes and weights available, and tons of colors and themed designs to suit your special interests.
I especially recommend this weighted blanket for kids and adults with intellectual disabilities or who tend to destroy things during meltdowns, as the stitching is very secure and can take a lot of pulling, stretching, and throwing. It can handle frequent washing, too. If you want to buy one weighted blanket and keep it forever rather than going through 3 cheap ones, do yourself a favor and choose Mosaic.
Pros
- Handmade in the USA — top-notch quality.
- Machine washable and extremely durable.
- Wide range of colors, patterns, and sizes.
- Many weight options for kids, teens, and adults.
Cons
- High price — but excellent quality

Weighted Blanket Basics
What is a weighted blanket?
Weighted blankets provide a gentle, even pressure across the body, mimicking the sensation of being firmly hugged or held. This comforting effect, known as deep pressure stimulation, can reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and help prevent autism meltdowns and sensory overload.
How are weighted blankets made?
Weighted blankets are typically made using quilted pockets filled with glass beads or plastic pellets. They can also be knitted with heavy fiber. They can be used with or without a duvet cover, depending on the model. Most are machine washable, but due to their weight and bulk, they usually have to be washed separately.
Do weighted blankets work for autism?
Yes, the sensory input from weighted blankets can be particularly beneficial for children and adults with autism and other forms of neurodiversity. Many neurodivergent people experience sensory processing differences, and a weighted blanket can help prevent sensory overload, meltdowns, panic attacks, and insomnia. They can be a crucial tool in a sensory integration kit, used to alleviate the overwhelming sights, sounds, and tactile sensations autistic people face daily. Regular use of a weighted blanket at night can improve executive functioning during the day.
Weighted blankets are inspired by the work of Dr. Temple Grandin, an autistic professor and advocate who designed a “squeeze machine” to provide deep touch pressure for herself and others with sensory processing disorders. Dr. Grandin's research on the benefits of deep touch pressure was published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology in 1992. Scientific research specifically devoted to weighted blankets is relatively new, but the results so far are encouraging. For example, a 2023 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy found that children and adults with ADHD and/or autism spectrum disorder who used a weighted blanket showed improved ability to fall asleep, stay asleep all night, and relax during the day.
How to Choose the Right Weighted Blanket
If you're trying to choose the right weighted blanket for someone with autism, ADHD, and or anxiety, here are some features to look for and aspects to consider.
Feature | Factors to Consider |
---|---|
Appropriate Weight | Correct weight provides therapeutic benefits without being too heavy. 10% of your body weight is a good guideline. However, if you're plus-size, you may want to go a bit lighter. For example, if you're a 200-pound woman, a 15-pound weighted blanket may be just fine. |
Size | Size affects weight distribution. If large portions of the blanket will be touching the bed and not your body, the blanket will feel lighter. Of course, you can always fold it if you need more weight against you. |
Material | Choose a material that suits sensory preferences and does not irritate the skin. If you get overheated at night, a bamboo blanket is a great choice. If you're often cold, try a soft minky weighted blanket or duvet cover. If the sound of the beads shifting around bothers you, try a knitted weighted |
Price | Quality matters. Due to their popularity, you can find a cheap weighted blanket nowadays, but it won't last as long. |
Washability | We highly recommend choosing a machine-washable blanket. If incontinence is an issue for you or your child, using a duvet cover may reduce how often you must wash the weighted portion. |
Safety | Ensure the blanket is not too heavy to get on and off easily and does not pose a risk of overheating. If you or your loved one has a physical disability that makes it difficult to adjust positioning and bedding, you may need to choose a lighter blanket or use a weighted pad over just a portion of your body. |
Remember, the choice of a weighted blanket is personal and should be tailored to your specific needs.
Funny Weighted Blanket Review
Hey, you scrolled all the way to the bottom! Not many people do, so as a reward for making it this far, here's a hilarious review I found on Amazon when putting together this article.
Transcript: 5.0 out of 5 stars Great for hunting racoons [sic]
Reviewed in Singapore on June 22, 2021

Although this is advertised as a way to improve sleep, I find the blanket is particularly useful for hunting wildlife. Even animals as big as a large dog can be subdued by the sheer weight of this landing on them.
Oooookaaaayyyy. You do you, I guess? If this is your use case, this individual recommends the Pure Bamboo Weighted Blanket.
