Sam’s Top Secret Journal – Book 1: Sam Spies by Sean Adelman Join Sam as she embarks on her first big adventure in this middle-grade mystery full of fun, suspense…and just the right amount of spying! Sam is a middle school girl living a normal life–except when she is occasionally bullied for the differences kids perceive in her. Sam has Down syndrome. But Sam is just like any of her friends. She likes to play basketball, perform in community plays, gossip about boys at lunchtime, and write about life in her top-secret journal. Plus, her Uncle Alex is coming home from Iraq soon, and with so much to do, there’s hardly time to dwell on anything except getting reading for his visit! But when curious occurrences start to disturb her community, Sam’s carefree life suddenly becomes dangerously serious. A shady man in a trench coat has stolen donuts from the bake sale, money is disappearing from donation jars at the farmer’s market, and worst of all, her friend Michael has gone missing and could be in real danger. Together with her gadget-savvy little brother, John, Sam is determined to solve Seattle’s most recent set of mysteries. With Sam’s big heart and John’s quick head, nothing can go wrong! …Right? With much more at stake than donuts, her adventures have only just begun! Sean Adelman is a practicing orthopedic surgeon in Seattle, Washington. Sean is an advocate for exceptional kids and enjoys his free time with his lovely wife, Susan, and his three children. When he’s not busy being a dad, surgeon, and author, he can be found running or playing classic rock and roll on his electric guitar.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Kirkus Review: "this ambitious book for children hits the mark more often than not. There's a lot to like about a mystery/adventure for preteens that takes on bullying, disabilities and a girl's growing need for independence, and Adelman manages to weave each of those topics into a compelling story for young readers."

"a fun read, just the right amount of mystery and information about Down Syndrome"--B. Anderson

"nice that part of the proceeds goes to inclusion charities"--Konnie Drews

"I loved the characters so much I stayed up last night to finish the book!"--M. Fox

"I taught elementary school for many years, I wish I had had a book like this to expose difference/diversity to my students" a wonderful retired teacher we met in Denver :-)

"I read this every night and morning and really enjoyed it!"--Mia, 8 year old wonder and author of "Over 8s Blog": over8s.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/sams-top-secret-book-review.html

From the Author

I wanted to create characters that people could relate to and be inspired by.  In all of the reading I have done with my kids I have not come across a story with a main character with Down Syndrome.  Sam is a wonderful character and all the things she does in the books are based on my daughters abilities.

The other reason for writing this series of books is to raise funds for inclusion programs and research.  At least 25% of the profits are donated to inclusion non-profits and/or wounded soldier charities.

I hope you enjoy my books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

I am an author and have a mentally handicapped sister and I loved this book. Sam's character is so well written. Her difficulties, her attitude, and even her personality shine with a real understanding of Down's children. I hope every parent reads this book to their child to encourage understanding and acceptance. I hope every parent of a Down's child helps their child read this book. I hope Sean has great success and keeps writing. All that said, there was even a well written plot! C.M. Huddleston author of Greg's First and Second Adventures in Time

I teach 4th grade and also have a little boy who has Down syndrome. My son is to young to read this book but I can't wait until he can. I have asked some of my students to read this book and give me their feedback. They all have enjoyed the book. They liked how it was true to life, their life, as well as showed them what someone with DS may feel or think even if they can't verbalize it. They also liked the mystery aspect of the book.

Great story (We Spy), not only for DS kids, but for raising "can-do" awareness with other kids as well as adults. Sam is not coddled but her differences are also not ignored. Instead, the focus is on her abilities.

7th Grader Sam Heidleman lives a pretty normal life – when she’s not being bullied for her Down Syndrome. She volunteers, plays on the basketball team, and solves mysteries!
Don’t miss out on this episode where Sam’s instincts are put into high gear when she sees one of her friends being bullied and winds up in a huge mystery!

    Hott Review:
We Spy is a terrific beginning to a series! I really enjoyed Sam and love how the family spends it’s time together and volunteering. It’s a great book for kids to see how important both of those things are.
This book is written for middle-graders that aren’t avid readers. There is a slower pace and more explanation than is needed for those that love reading. It’s perfect for my daughter who, though a middle-grader, prefers childrens books because they’re more inclined to explain important things and not include unnecessary details.

    Downs syndrome.... differently tabled.

Wonderfully and sensitively written. You have to keep reminding yourself the main character has Downs Syndrome.
