Review

Danielle Quintero *****Good Reads ReviewI loved how his mother made this book to help him better understand who he is and why things are the way they are for him. She made sure he knew he was special in the most amazing way and to never let other people tell him different. He was diagnosed with Autism/Aspergers as a child so his "superhero" power as his mom called it, should never define him, but just make him a stronger person. She goes on to help him and help others know their "superhero" powers as well. It is a sweet and touching book, and I love it even more because it is based on the life of the author and her son, so it's more real.

What a Wonderful Book!
One of the best, yet simplest, conversations about a topic that touches the lives of so many children, their families, their friends, their teachers. The "Helpful Hints for Friends" sprinkled throughout the book are insightful and practical!

Great way to encourage the appreciation of diversity in the classroom!
As a special education teacher I found this book very valuable not only in reminding myself of the special aspects of the child with autism (in particular the part about energy drainers and energy builders), but a great introduction for all students in the classroom to gain an understanding of some of the peers in their midst who might seem a bit different. I especially enjoyed the bits of humor throughout and the end where Nathan's states "That was exhausting" and goes to his room to play with blocks by himself. Such a great representation of student's with this disability, while still stressing the individuality of each child.

*****
Great book with awesome tips. For all ages.
I was gifted this book by a friend. I have a grandson on the spectrum and this really helped me to understand what is happening with him. I've read several books but all were geared to adults and very clinical. This gave great tips and suggestions and will help us going forward. I bought 2 more copies for the other set of grandparents and his parents. I think it will really allow his big brother learn to help too. Love it.

From the Author

What makes Nathan a superhero? His Autism Spectrum Superpowers!
-
Nathan's Autism Spectrum Superpowers, the first book in the One Three Nine Inspired series, offers a unique perspective on how kids with autism see the world. Each superpower also comes with a "Helpful Hints" section for friends, families, and caregivers because sometimes superpowers can spiral out of control.
-
Why this new perspective? I wanted my son to know that just because he reacted to things differently than his friends, that didn't make him odd, it made him special. So I came up with an idea to explain autism in a way that
made sense to him. After I told Nathan about "Supersonic Hearing," he finally understood why noises could be so loud and overwhelming, and he wanted to know ALL his superpowers.
-
All kids need to believe they're wonderfully made.
Nathan's Autism Spectrum Superpowers helps show them their value and encourages them to believe in their own worth.

Perfect for my little superhero
When we introduced our (almost) 6 year old to his autism, we used this book and family superhero shirts (the body of the batman symbol is a puzzle piece). This is a picture of us after we read through the book for the first time. You'll see our son holding a framed poster of a Bible verse, which was the last page of the book. There were some big words, but he really enjoyed the book. Our 8 year old clearly understood the book and really liked the "helpful hints for friends" sections at the end of each page. Our biggest issue was that one of the pages talks about taking things literally, and yet another page introduced his metaphorical tool box that was stocked with a "Plan A," but not a "Plan B." He had a lot of trouble grasping that concept. Everything else in the book was clearly understood. It's not a one-time story/conversation to have with him. I appreciate that the book was a little over his comprehension level so that he can keep reading it and keep talking about it as he grows. In the meantime, he proudly wears his autism superhero shirt while hugging this book. He took it to school and his teacher read the book to his entire class. It was very empowering tool him!

My son thinks like scientist in this book was a great fit from the perspective of a peer. It’s a long read, so I don’t think that it would be good for younger kids. For my eight year old who was recently diagnosed, he took to this well. It does a great job of explaining things and making them sound special. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a book from a kids perspective with explanation and tools to help.

Loves that there was a very detailed explanation of Nathan's ASD characteristics and put a very positive spin on it. Our Autistic son is 7 years old, and though younger than the child who this story was about it was worded in a way even he could understand. It was great to see our son was able to identify his own ASD characteristics, and instead of feeling down about his condition was able to finally see it in the positive way we, his parents, had already felt. Seeing this through the eyes of another Autistic child was very beneficial. I do wish that the font was able to expand when reading on a cell phone though as it was very tiny and difficult to read at times. Otherwise a tremendous book for your little one, and was also an amazing tool to help his older siblings better understand ASD and not only the challenges our youngest son faces, but, also help get a glimpse into the mind and see the positives as well. Great read for the entire family.

This book explains autism from a strengths based perspective which is vital. It is the best kids book on autism I’ve found and I’ve looked at a lot. It also gives tips for kids that aren’t autistic as to how they can help their autistic classmates or friends! Love this book!!

We have a family with multiple people on the spectrum. It’s perfect for letting the kids know although they all have the same diagnosis they are special in their own ways. It also helps them look at autism in a positive light. Looking at the “able” not the label. The only negative is it’s a little long so it took a couple reads to read it all the way through, but it’s worth it because it gives great details and helpful hints. Absolutely love it.

This is the best book to help your autistic child understand his/her special super powers and all those involved with them on how to help them! It details each aspect of his/her super power, ie: like "super sniffer." It explains why he/she may be repelled or seek certain smells. Then there's a little box at the bottom for friends (or family) on how they can help their friend if he/she is overwhelmed by their super sniffer. Another great tool is the Over-reaction chart! It helps your autistic child by explaining that they may be exhibiting a level 5 reaction of "Total emergency- you can freak out" and it needs to be a 2 "Unexpected situation- bummer- not a big deal." Can I tell you what a lifesaver this has been?! Wherever we are I can help my son react properly to any situation by using this chart. It's in his classroom and SPED class as well! An absolute must have book.

I’m giving this 5 stars because my recently turned 3-year-old son with mild to moderate ASD loves it. I’ll admit that I was skeptical when I looked at the pages initially before reading it to him (he was 2 at the time). The pages do have a lot of information, and the paragraphs on some pages are long; however, it’s not substantially different from Dragons love Tacos (which my son also loves).

He is in speech 5 days a week and has only begun acquiring some language in the last few months, but “superpowers” is a word that he uses proactively to say he wants to read this book. He also likes to sit alone in his teepee and look at it.

As with all books, I think you have to gauge your kid’s level of interest and adjust how you use the book. You don’t have to read every word on every page, and many of the pages are written such that you can read 1-2 sentences. I like it because it introduces tools and language that we can use with him in everyday life that he remembers from the book, so he is more receptive.
