Susan Laughs Hardcover – Picture Book, September 1, 2000
Purchase options and add-ons
Susan laughs, she sings. she rides, she swings.
She gets angry, she gets sad, she is good, she is bad...
Told in rhyme, this story follows Susan through a series of familiar activities. She swims with her father, works hard in school, plays with her friends -- and even rides a horse. Lively, thoughtfully drawn illustrations reveal a portrait of a busy, happy little girl with whom younger readers will identify. Not until the end of the story is it revealed that Susan uses a wheelchair.
Told with insight, and without sentimentality, here is an inspiring look at one spunky little girl whose physical disability is never seen as a handicap.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2014Love this book. Simply put for young kids. It shows several illustrations of a little girl who can do many things, with simple statements on each page. The last page reveals that she uses a wheelchair. We just ordered my daughter's first wheelchair and I can't wait to share this book with others. I bought a few copies. The kids at daycare are well aware of what my daughter can do, but this will be great for her classroom and other classrooms when she attends pre-k. Wonderful book. Highly recommend for any child, their daycare or classroom, wheelchair or not.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2004This is a wonderful Book! I have taken this book with me to every family I babysit for - Every child has asked me to read it again. The pictures are great - very expressive. This book is great for all children. What is great is that each child I babysit for has had a different reaction to the final picture (The only picture of Susan in a wheelchair). Some older children have told me about a kid in their grade who uses a wheelchair, some of the younger kids show no surprise whatsever - to them Susan really is no different anyway!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2012This is a good book for young children. It shows a child doing all the "normal" things throughout the story. Its not until the last page you see that the child happens to be in a wheelchair. I think this is perfect for a pre-schooler, its just a couple words on each page, and it introduces them to the topic of disability or rather ABILITY. I have twin boys, one of whom uses a wheel chair so we live the true story of ALL the things he can do, not just the one thing he can't (walk). But I'm planning on taking this book to his pre-school and sharing with his friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2015I love, love, love this book! I would highly recommend it to any teachers of young children, especially toddlers or preschoolers. The illustrations are wonderful and the children often laugh at the things Susan gets up to, but in the end there is also a clear message about diversity. Love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2014Great book. Susan is just like everyone else; at the end of the book the reader discovers that Susan is in a wheelchair. As a mom of 2 daughters with physical limitations, I am always searching for books that have characters using equipment without the equipment being the focus of the book. This book meets that quest!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2015This is a story that every child should read to have understandings for others differences.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2012Bought for work to read to people with disabilities. They all enjoyed it as did I. Sweet and simple-- a quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2012The book it's self was great. But the binding was torn really bad, and I can't leave in my classroom library because of it's condition.

Great book. I bought it for a class about disabilities and the taste was to find a book with a child with a disability where the disability was not the main focus of the story. I will carry this with me through my years as an RECE as a perfect short story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super book

5.0 out of 5 stars Version anglaise d'Alice Sourit
"Susan laughs, Susan sings,
Susan flies, Susan swings.
Susan's good, Susan's bad,
Susan's happy, Susan's sad.
etc..."
